Modifican la composición química superficial CEMENTACION. Aumenta el contenido superficial de carbono y luego de un temple y revenido se obtiene alta dureza superficial y un nucleo con buena tenacidad (fabricación de engranajes)
VENTAJAS DEL TRATAMIENTO CRIOGÉNICO.

NITRURACION. Aporta nitrogeno a la capa superficial, lo cual la endurece notablemente, mejorando su resistencia al desgaste.
VENTAJAS SOBRE LA NITRURACIÓN.
- El proceso es mas rápido ( 03 horas en lugar de 06).
- La capa endurecida presenta una mayor tenacidad.
- Mejor resistencia al desgaste.
- Menor tendencia al despostillamiento de la capa formada.
- Se obtiene una mayor dureza en los aceros de baja aleación.
NITROCARBURIZACION.Proceso por el cual se adiciona por difusión Nitrógeno y Carbono a la superficie de materiales ferrosos (a diferencia de la nitruración donde solo se adiciona Nitrógeno) formándose así una capa de carbonitruros y nitruros en la superficie.
CARBONITRURACION . Mediante la absorcion de carbono y nitrogeno y un posterior temple al aceite y revenido se endurece la capa superficial .
